Growing up, Audit Supervisor Kathleen Booker spent a lot of time involved in youth development – doing everything from after-school tutoring for underserved communities to serving as a production camp counselor to serving as the board of directors’ student representative for an arts organization. She was also involved in youth ministry and, at the early age of 17, showed off her entrepreneurial chops as the owner and operator of an apparel company.
Several years later, after selling her business, earning an accounting degree at the University of California – Los Angeles and building a successful career at Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell (CBM), she’s back at it. Kathleen was recently named to the board of directors of Kid Power, a not-for-profit organization that inspires youth leadership by promoting academic advancement, physical and emotional wellness, and positive civic engagement in underserved communities throughout the District of Columbia.
The new role gives her the chance to exercise her passion for instilling confidence in younger generations and equipping them with the tools they need to share their futures. Kathleen’s training as an accountant will also serve her well as a member of Kid Power’s finance committee, where she will collaborate with other board members to ensure the not-for-profit organization has the resources to build holistic solutions to challenges facing the organization and its youth community. She will also leverage her experience supporting not-for-profit organizations as a member of CBM’s client service team to proactively respond to accounting challenges and further Kid Power’s inspiring charitable mission over the coming fiscal year.
Kid Power, which was founded in March 2002, helps hundreds of youths succeed academically, empowers them to become engaged leaders and responsible citizens and fosters healthy living through community gardens. Kid Power’s services include an after-school program, a summer leadership program, a mentor and enrichment program and an in-school program, engaging students from pre-k through 12th grade.
Everyone at CBM is proud of Kathleen Booker and her new role, and wishes Kid Power and its community every success in the future.
