Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell (CBM), a Bethesda, MD-based accounting and advisory firm, leaped six spots in the Washington Business Journal’s annual list of top accounting firms, and returned CBM to the list of Top 25 accounting firms in the Washington, DC metropolitan region.
“Our bench strength is now at a point that allows us to better serve the diverse needs of our clients,” said Peter B. Reilly, CPA, CVA, the firm’s president and managing partner. “The acquisition of May & Barnhard, a local tax and financial consulting firm, provides us with the talent and niche expertise to help clients respond to the effects of the new tax law while building out additional areas of service.”
Last year, CBM ranked #30 on the Washington Business Journal’s list of top accounting firms. In addition to welcoming new team members over the past year, CBM expanded its Bethesda office space to fill the 5th floor of the Landow Building at 7910 Woodmont Avenue, and hosted a firm-wide open house on February 10 to welcome incoming clients and industry representatives for a celebratory evening.
Shortly following the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in late 2017, CBM also staged a series of presentations on the new tax legislation. “As CBM develops a reputation as a growing accounting and advisory firm throughout the DC region,” continued Reilly, “we will be called upon to demonstrate our leadership especially in cases such as the passage of historic tax legislation. Individuals and businesses wonder what decisions to make about their taxes, and we want to encourage them to turn to CBM for guidance.”
In January and February, CBM hosted nearly 10 presentations for audiences as diverse as the Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce, the Metro Washington chapter of the American Subcontractors Association, the Women’s Bar Association of Montgomery County, and broader audiences of attorneys and professional service leaders, clients, prospects and industry representatives from the not-for-profit sector, and individual and business clients. These events, staged in Bethesda, MD and Washington, DC, opened CBM’s expertise to audiences across the Washington metropolitan region firm and incorporated, in two cases, successful partnerships with Graystone Consulting, a business of Morgan Stanley, and Revere Bank.
While CBM is now entrenched in tax season, two events have already been scheduled this spring highlighting financial planning aspects of divorce and CBM’s expertise serving as a financial neutral in collaborative divorce cases.
